Boxy Silhouette

If you follow me on Instagram, you may already be familiar with some of these outfit drawings as well as drawings from blogs that I have yet to post. In an effort to get myself back into the swing of things, I made it a point to post something every day during the month of December and label it with the hashtag #31daysofstyle. So far I've managed to keep it up and I don't feel overwhelmed about it. This is a good thing and hopefully this exercise will be the thing that will change my habits and make blogging a more regular activity.

I've been highlighting a few silhouettes that I wear on the regular. This is what I call the boxy/mini or the boxy/slim. It's usually a boxy high collared top paired with a very short or slim fitting skirt. I like the juxtaposition between the legginess and volume that this silhouette creates.

This look was a good idea in theory, but it just didn't turn out quite right. The material of the top and the skirt are rather heavy and kind of bulky and they did not play well together. While the colors looked stunning together, I was constantly adjusting my clothes because of the friction that these two fabrics created. I think that this top would work better with a lightweight pleated tennis skirt, but I don't have anything like that.

I'm playing with a lot of layers here to achieve this casual and studious look. I feel like I should have drawn in a stack of books under one of my arms. Maybe it's the color scheme of bright red, mustard yellow and light denim that reminds me of school. Whatever it is, it make me want to go to the library.

This bodycon dress from LulaRoe is so much fun and pretty versatile. I can easily dress it up or down. I can wear it by itself, layer it with jackets or vests or wear it as a skirt like I'm doing here. I'm really happy that it matches this sweater that I wear all the time.

Here's that sweater again. I wish I had more of them in different colors like black or white, but I'm glad that the one I have is yellow. Yellow goes with everything and I've worn this sweater in innumerable outfit combinations since I got it at a very good clothing exchange

I love this sweater just as much as the yellow one, but I don't wear it as often. This is an around the house or weekend low key hang sweater. It's incredibly warm and kind of delicate so I never wear it to work where I do a lot of physical activity and regularly catch myself on merchandising hooks or protruding corners. I would ruin this sweater in an instant at work. A lot of people don't see me wearing this sweater on the regular, but during the colder months, I'm almost always wearing it when I'm at home. I had a mostly event free weekend and I wore this sweater everyday on top of boxy mini dresses with tall wool socks or leg warmers and I knew the meaning of hygge.

Going Blonde for a Minute

As I put this post together, I realized that all of my outfits involve some combination of yellow, blue and white.  I do believe that I have acquired a new color scheme this spring.  While, last year I was exclusively wearing camel, orange, blazers, and oxfords, this year I'm light, springy, nautical, and YELLOW and I love it!

I don't normally buy things for full price at Urban Outfitters.  I think that while their clothes are on trend, the craftsmanship is questionable and the prices are too high.  I did, however, buy this sweater a few years ago at full price after a couple weeks of full on coveting and I have had no regrets about it.  While I don't wear it terribly often, it is one of the favorite tops in my wardrobe, mostly for the design.  It's relatively long, nautical (of course!), and the deep v-neck is mirrored in the back, making this sweater pretty dang sexy.  I think the reason it doesn't get worn that often is because it's a short sleeved sweater.  Too hot for summer, too cold for winter.  There are literally 2-4 weeks out of the Minnesota year that I can comfortably wear this little gem.

Sunday
Ah Mother's day!  I can't help myself from dressing up on holidays.  In my head, this is something that everyone does, but in reality, I'm the only one.  Oh well, maybe it was my goal to be the chicest lady at the nursing home.  In fact, that was my goal.  Once, as a fat, acne prone teenager visiting my Grandma in her nursing home, a cute old lady asked me if I was a model.  I was very flattered and have been trying to impress old ladies ever since.  It's actually not that hard.

This is what I was going for back in April.  I really love this skirt.  It's so classic and flattering and all around wonderful.  If only I had the patience or cared enough to iron all of those pleats.  Alas, ironing is the worst.

Wednesday

I think I was in college when I bought this dress with big plans to alter it into something extraordinary.  I can't quite remember what it looked like then and I know that it sat in an "in-progress" sewing bag for years.  I almost threw it away many times.  After all of that, I think the only thing I changed were the sleeves that were probably long with cuffs.  And you know what?  This dress is and probably always was extraordinary.  The fabric is lightweight and slick, almost like silk, but obviously synthetic.  The print is really subtle and interesting, while the bright red collar is bold and screams 1980s waitress.  The skirt length and button up collar make it modest enough to wear to work, while still being eye-catching.  All in all, I'm glad I didn't toss it in some life cleansing fit, as I tend to do.

After many months of pinterest plans to get a cute pixie cut and dye it blonde, I finally went through with it.  I'll admit, I was a little scared of how it would turn out.  Will all of my hair fall out?  Will blonde hair make my pinkish complexion appear red?  Will I have more fun?  All valid concerns.
It turns out that I adore it and my biggest problem so far is dealing with all of the attention I'm getting from other people who also adore it.

I've got the transitional weather blues.

This past month, I was pretty lax about drawing my outfit everyday, which lead to wearing a bunch of really boring t-shirt and jeans ensembles.  Really, I'm just sick of my winter clothes and don't care about what I wear until it starts to warm up around here.  Come on Spring, let's kick it into gear, already.

Here's a week's worth of outfits from the past month that I decided to capture.

Finally, an outfit with these pants that doesn't make me look like a clown.  Unfortunately, I did not go out to enjoy an Irish Car Bomb in this chic Saint Patrick's Day outfit.  Actually, I don't think that's a thing.  It's probably better that I didn't go out.  This look would have gone unappreciated.

The shirt I drew and claim to have worn is not actually not what I wore.  It doesn't really matter, but I didn't want anyone to think that I wore the same shirt two days in a row.  It's very important that I point this out for some reason.

I don't know what's happening here.  It must have snowed today.

These are my new favorite shoes.  They look great with everything and are super comfortable.  They're going to get a lot of wear this spring.  I cannot express how versatile a pair of yellow heels can be.  Wait, I can.  They're very versatile.

It snowed today.  The weather has been unseasonably cold all week, so I've been wrapping myself in cashmere and down coats.  It's warm and cozy, but I hate it.

New. Favorite. Outfit.

I love this fun 60s look.  While the weather is still a little chilly, I was able to coax a little Spring into my spirit with this bright orange vintage dress and not feel so miserable.  How much do I love this dress?  The answer is: A lot.

Vanishing Snow Brings a Variety of Shoes.

Monday

This fantastic dress makes me feel like a 70s stewardess, in a good way.

Ooh stripes and florals.  It's not something that I do a lot, but I like it.

Wednesday

Gray Tan Stripes Henley Mini Boots Pennies.  There's nothing I don't like about this outfit.  My cartoon character might wear this.

 Thursday

This is my crazy lady tunic.  Go ahead.  Take in all of this crazy.

Friday

And this is my crazy lady dress.  Seriously, I like this dress in theory, but it just doesn't work on me.  If I do up the top 2 buttons, the dress pulls because it's too tight across my chest.  However, the empire waist is very loose and makes me look wide.  I always have to wear a shirt under the dress and and I've tried belting it to make it fit closer to my body.  Bottom line is, it's more of a hassle than it is fabulous.  I'm getting rid of it.  Maybe there's a barrel chested woman out there with no boobs who this is perfect for.  Actually it's probably perfect for a man.

 Saturday

These shiny red shoes are really fun to draw.  In fact, most shoes are really fun to draw.

Hard to style clothing problems solved, thanks to hoarding.

This week I inadvertently wore a bunch of clothing items that I've had forever, but never get worn because they're hard to style.  Luckily, some recent acquisitions and new ideas have made these pieces work.  I love solving these kinds of problems.

Monday

Here's a little winter get-up to try and convince myself that January's not so bad.  Oh, who am I kidding?  January's the worst!

Tuesday
Boots - Delia's

I feel like I've been  leaning towards men's wear this winter.  Wool, straight up!  And how great is this sweater?  It's so soft and warm and simple.

I was really excited to buy these pants because I was looking for a slim pair of black dress pants and Express had them for half off.  Perfect, right?  Well, they're OK.  Because they're stretch, they tend to get saggy over the course of the day and the fit changes.  I guess I'm still looking.

Here, I'm pairing two hard to style items and I think it's working out pretty well.  The dress is sort of awkward because it's white with a summery crinoline underneath that suggests warm weather.  The fabric, however, is pretty substantial and heavy.  Today, I got crazy and cut the crinoline out of the dress.  I think it looks better, but the skirt now sticks to my tights.  I guess next time, I'll just have to wear it with a slip.  The sweater is also hard to style because of it's length and bulk.  I'm busty as it is, and this thing adds a lot of volume where I don't need it.  I really like it though.  It's like something straight out of Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead.  That's a good thing, I genuinely like the fashion in that movie.  I think that putting the bright colors of the sweater on a blank canvas makes it look less loud and the dress' voluminous skirt balances out the bulky sweater.  One small victory.

This sweatshirt was a sweet garage sale find and the pants were purchased out of self inflicted pressure to buy something during a trip to Montreal.  They're fancy jeans that were only $20, but the rise is a little low, so I hardly ever wear them.

This shirt is extremely unique and I'm having a hard time finding anything online to compare it to.  It's basically a vintage vest and a moomoo re-purposed into a blouse.  It's also another top that I've always found hard to style.  Again, it's very voluminous and needs to be balanced out on the bottom.  I recently bought these pants at Anthropologie for a good price and they're a perfect match for this top.  My two loves, Dale's and Anthropologie joining forces to create this cute outfit!

My fancy face does not match this casual Sunday get-up.  A friend of mine had a groupon for facials at Blush Beauty Room.  I got my make up done by a stranger, which is not something I usually enjoy and I think it turned out really nice.  Yay for that!

A New Year is Glittering with Possibilities

Monday
Similar hat - Savers

I'm not sure how I feel about pairing this dress with black, but I was so excited when I got it that I couldn't wait to wear it.  The minute it came in the mail, the dress I was wearing was on the floor and this baby was on my body.  Also, it matches my boots perfectly!!  It's actually a summer dress and I'm excited to wear the shit out of it when I don't have to have a mini mouse under layer.

This New Year's Eve I went for shiny and I was probably the fanciest lady at the Cabooze.  At least I didn't wear a fur like I normally do on this holiday.  I didn't think the hippies would care for it much.

Wednesday

Normally on New Year's Day, you can find me laying on the couch with my dog in my pajamas.  However, Sample Night Live landed on January 1st this year, so I got all dressed up to play a couple of songs with my band and try to sell some art.

Not much to say about this outfit except it was really comfortable and I'm in love with these boots.

I found this amazing dress at Up 6 when shopping for my Halloween costume.  It's a summer dress, but I really wanted to wear it, so I styled it as best I could for Fall.  I think it's pretty successful.  I might do more outfits like this with my other summer maxi dresses.

I went on tour with my husband's band this weekend to Chicago, Madison and Milwaukee.  I am a notorious over packer, so since I was a non-essential passenger on this trip, I did my best to pack as light as possible and I think I did a pretty good job of coming up with this capsule wardrobe.  I wore 6 different outfits, but could have combined what I brought to make at least 6 more.  When I pack, I like to start by choosing a color pallet.  This time it was black, camel, white and orange.  I started with my tan leather skirt and trusty orange cords.  From there I chose a few tops that I could wear with either of those two items as well as sweaters for layering.  I threw in a little black dress that could be worn with tights, leggings or pants.  Everything else was accessories: a few earrings and necklaces, a hat, a gray scarf, a black jacket, different colored tights, fun socks, black and brown boots.  It worked out splendidly.  I felt like I had options each day.  I could be dressy or casual and every choice was comfortable.
I did have a few flaws in my packing job.  I didn't need two long gray sweaters, I brought two shirts that I did not wear and I didn't pack enough underwear.
