Seemingly Serendipitous Style

Earrings by Dottir

The scarf in my hair perfectly captures all of the colors in my outfit in a fun paint splatter design.
I did not buy the scarf with this outfit in mind, but when I got dressed and started looking for a scarf to put in my hair, it seemed as though it was always meant to be.
People often ask me if I bought certain perfectly matching items together and let me tell you, that is never the case. I hardly ever shop for full outfits. Instead, I pick out individual pieces that I know will fit in with the rest of my wardrobe. It makes shopping and dressing a lot easier when you have taken the time to define your personal style. For me that means identifying my preferred silhouettes, color palette and fabrics and only incorporating items that fit within those guidelines.

I have found Anuschka Rees' blog to be a great resource in how to define my personal style.

Just Add a Beret

Ooh la la, of course I wore a beret with this outfit. How could I not?
However, I did not draw on a little mustache even though I should have.

Free Garage Sale

A couple of years ago, I came across a garage sale where everything was free. The woman hosting the sale was a local performer who was just trying to clear out the clutter and oh my god, was her clutter fabulous! A huge chunk of the sale consisted of clothes and jewelry. Racks upon racks of dresses, coats, hats, wigs, costume jewelry, shoes, you name it. It was heaven and boy did I go home with a haul.
I've since considered doing the same type of thing. Just bring all of my clutter out to the curb for a weekend and host a free for all. It would definitely take a massive weight off of my shoulders, but at the same time I know I could make good money selling all of the vintage clothes that comprise a lot of my "clutter".
That being said, I'm in the baby stages of planning a vintage sale. Stay tuned for more info.

Drop Waist Dress

I say that I never wear drop waist dresses, but here I am sporting one and loving it.
Drop waist dresses draw a line across the widest part of my body, making me appear larger than I am. I think this dress works because it's flowy all over like a tunic, rather than a dress. It's also short enough to show a lot of leg and my legs are, in my opinion, my best feature.

On another note, aren't these shoes divine? They belonged to a friend of mine who wore them at her wedding and decided that she would probably never wear them again. We wear the same size and have similar taste, so she knew where they would get some more love. And they have. I love them.

On Becoming Little Edie

Ever since my last haircut I've had an increasing number of bad hair days. I still get lots of compliments on my hair, but I'm not happy with it. I find myself battling a cowlick in the back that never existed before along with other hair drama. I don't know why this is happening, but it is.
To alleviate the stresses of bad hair, I've come to rely on scarves. Scarves are not new to me. Tying a scarf in my hair as a fashion accessory has been a go-to Spring/Summer look for me for a couple of years now. It's only recently that I'm covering my entire head of hair in a scarf, accented by a big bow, brooch or flower. What I find interesting is that even though the reason for the scarf is to cover up the unsightly mess underneath, there's something glamorous about a head wrapped up in fabric.
My new look reminds me of the movie Grey Gardens. I feel a fondness towards Little Edie. She lives in squalor, is held back by her mother, her hair is falling out, but that doesn't stop her from being fabulous.
Of course, she's completely delusional, but who cares. It's all about attitude.

A friend asked me today, what it is about these jeans that make my legs look so long. I told her that my legs actually are long, but it helps that these jeans reach the ground even when I'm wearing heeled boots. There is a current trend that I'm not into, which is cropped wide-bottomed pants (wide-legs & flares). If you want to make your legs look super short, wear these.

Here's another yellow and black ensemble. The colors in this photo are way off. That sweater is actually a light yellow and white. I had to darken it up so that you could see the gray hounds tooth pattern on my skirt. Oy, I'm not so good with photo editing. Cute outfit though.

Since I started this blog, I've had a number of people ask me about this place called My Sister's Closet. "Is it actually your sister's closet or what's the deal?" No, I do not have a sister who's closet supplies me with endless amounts of fabulous clothing. My Sister's Closet is a store with two locations in the Twin Cities. They are consignment and they specialize in quality women's clothing and accessories, modern and vintage, at reasonable prices. I love this place. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, the prices are appropriate and the inventory is well-curated. Check it out next time you find yourself on Grand Ave or in Uptown. I dare you not to find something amazing.

I wore purple today in memory of Prince. I have yet to put into words the impact this news had on me, but I don't think I need to. Literally everyone I know and don't know has written about their feelings on the loss of the purple one and my sadness and devastation echos theirs. My heart is heavy.

Yellow and Black? Like a Bumblebee?

I tend to gravitate towards a different set of colors each season and I've been feeling Yellow and Black this spring. I'm finding that only using the black, white, gray and yellow items in my closet this season, I am able to come up with multitudes of interesting and chic outfits. Here's a sampling of some from last week.

The first night that I wore this look, it was a big hit and I've been recreating this silhouette ever since.  This combination of high-waisted, slim fitting pants, a tucked in blouse, and a cropped jacket really works for me. It's also a good way to utilize this amazing yellow and black plaid jacket that I scored at a garage sale last fall.

I do believe that this scarf is what influenced this color combination in the first place. It's probably the best scarf that ever existed and I wish I had at least 4 more just like it. There's something about it that makes many of my ensembles look effortless and completely pulled together at the same time.

Ok, so this outfit does not include yellow, but it's a pretty good use of only black and white and it's an incredible example of my layering skills. This outfit consists of black leggings underneath a long-sleeved black slip dress underneath a short-sleeved sweater dress underneath a sleeveless, knee length vest and I've managed to avoid looking bulky or busy. Excuse me while I give myself a round of applause.

I love this outfit. One of my favorite shirts and favorite skirts combined to create what I think encompasses my overall spring aesthetic.

My Sister's Closet FTW

Can you tell that I really like to shop at My Sister's Closet? I've been shopping and consigning there for years. They have a wide variety of designer and vintage clothes for hella reasonable prices and  I consign there so I almost always have credit. How can you go wrong?
The Mall of St Paul is also my happy place. If you've never been there, please go and not just while you're waiting for a table at The Blue Door. Spend some time, get acquainted, find that perfect thing that you didn't know you couldn't live without (yellow and gray silk scarf).

Crop Top!

This is the third iteration of this outfit that I came up with today. This oftentimes happens when I buy something new. I get so excited about styling it, that I'll continue to alter my look throughout the day until it's just right.
The first version that I wore to work was the crop top with a brown leather pencil skirt, knee high boots and a jacket. This was cute, but a little uncomfortable. When I got home from work, I changed into a black embellished a-line skirt. Much more comfortable and super cute, but a little chilly for the weather. I had an engagement that evening and changed yet again because I was afraid of being cold. I put on some black tights and a black knit pencil skirt and discovered the best outfit of them all. I threw on my orange leather jacket and felt quite chic. I was, however, overdressed for a casual baby shower, but my friends have come to expect that of me.

T-shirt & Jeans

I remember waking up this morning thinking "I just want to be comfortable today. Maybe a t-shirt and jeans"
I don't know why that combination always pops in my mind when I think of comfort because I haven't been comfortable in a t-shirt and jeans since high school.
Anywho, I took a trip down to my closet and somehow came up with this ensemble.
A leather skirt with a tight sweater is maybe the opposite of t-shirt and jeans.
Sometimes I just don't understand myself.

Combating Clouds

Here's another outfit from last week that I'm going to forgo giving the deets on.

Last Monday was a stupid, cloudy, rainy day so I wore bright yellow and pink to put myself in a better mood. I don't remember if it worked, but I do tend wear this dress on rainy days. There's just something about it.

Nautical

Whoa, I'm way behind. This outfit is from 2 weeks ago! I'm not going to take the time to list out the individual garments and where they came from like I normally do. Sorry.

I really adore this outfit. I hardly ever wear blue, but I'm really digging this. This whole look is based on my desire to wear this cute nautical cardigan that I recently scored at Davina's pop-up shop.
I tried it with a red dress and it seemed like I was trying too hard. A white dress managed to cool things off and make the overall look seem somehow easy.

Also, I've been loving these shoes this spring and this is my favorite outfit that I've worn them with. They're absolutely perfect!

To Pom Pom or not to Pom Pom?

Does this dress make me look like a clown? I'm debating on whether or not to remove the pom poms. They're really cute, but they might be cuter on something else...like a hat.

Casual Sunday

I wore this for a slow paced day of grocery shopping, dog walking, and art making. To my delight, the day became too hot, that I ended up losing the sweater tights and replacing them with red knee socks and boots. Both outfits were very cute and comfortable.

New Favorite Outfit

I have so many things to say about this outfit.
First of all, I've been watching Friends lately and I find that this outfit is very Phoebe inspired. Side note: Phoebe is surprisingly my new favorite character. She's presented as quirky, ditsy and weird, but she usually gives the best advice and comes off as the most grounded and sound minded member of the group. Kind of like Luna in Harry Potter. Also, she dresses cool.
Second, this skirt is actually a maxi dress that I've folded under to fit like a floor-sweeping skirt. This is one of the many things that I do to extend my wardrobe. Just because something was intended to be worn one way, doesn't mean that you have to wear it like that. I wear shit inside out and backwards often. Layering with sleepwear is another go to for me. Dresses as skirts and skirts as dresses is pretty common.
Third, the top is a wash-shrunken shirt that someone gave to me because it was too small for her. It's too small for me too, but I took it anyway. Normally, I wear it underneath things so that you can't tell how short it is. After trying my dress as skirt idea, I thought, this would look really great with a crop top, which I don't have. Bright idea! Wash-shrunken shirt is now a crop top.
Now I want to go out and buy a crop top or two because I foresee them as something that will get a lot of wear this summer.
I topped this all off with my sweet sweet orange leather jacket and this officially became my new favorite outfit. I'm restraining myself from wearing this everyday.

Wonder Skirt

Let's talk about this skirt for a minute. It's one of a kind, it's reversible, it's one size fits all due to the snaps all the way around the waistband and it comes with a little matching purse that clips onto the the skirt. I've seen these at Poppy since I started shopping there and thought they were a great concept, but I was never taken with any of them enough to make a purchase. See, all of the skirts are different and are designed to have a boho mix and match kind of style. While, I think that's brilliant (I do the same with my purses), I didn't care for any of the combinations I saw...until I saw this one. It's pretty darn cute.

Springtime!

I bought this skirt months ago and instantly paired it in my head with this bodycon dress. Since then, I've been waiting for an opportunity to wear it. Spring has arrived and the weather is temperate, so my opportunity is now. Nailed it.

Superhero

I've been feeling the primary colors lately and I find that wearing red yellow and blue makes me feel like a superhero. If I was a superhero, this skirt would be my cape and I'd probably wear some tough boots and a lot of gold jewelry.

Has an orange leather jacket no limits?

Monday
Similar earrings - Savers

On Sunday, I imagined myself in this outfit, strolling through the Art Crawl in Lowertown St Paul. Too bad it rained all day and I never changed out of my pajamas...or even got out of bed.  It rained again on Monday, but I had to wear clothes and go to work so here it is.  It's a perfect outfit for a rainy Spring day.  If only I had drawn an umbrella.  What was I thinking, not drawing an umbrella?!

Tuesday

I started out with a completely different outfit.  I was going to wear a new to me vintage dress that I was busting at the seams to wear.  Literally.  Late for work, I got in my car and the side seam ripped all the way down from my armpit to my waist.  I ran inside, flung my ripped dress off and threw this trusty old jumper on.  Never has this jumper failed me.  If my house caught on fire, I would grab this and run.

I bought this sweet orange leather jacket almost 2 years ago because I thought that I needed it in my life.  Since then, I have been intimidated by it.  I tried wearing it a couple of times and just felt foolish and over the top, which is ridiculous.  I've worn way more over the top garments than an orange leather jacket.  So now, I've made it a point to try to include this jacket in as many outfits as possible until I feel comfortable wearing it.  Here is my first attempt.

Sweet dress, right?  The best part is, it's reversible.  This is the what it looks like inside out.

P.S. I wore the orange leather jacket today and felt a little weird about it, but I did receive a couple of compliments.

P.P.S. As it turns out, the orange leather jacket is working.  While catching up on reading a few blogs, I spotted myself like a celebrity in US Weekly.  The woman who took my picture for her blog a few weeks ago, unknowingly blogged about me again.  Clearly, she likes my style and again, I am very flattered.
